Module 5 – LGBTQI+ 101: Human rights and the systems of oppression

Aims

This module introduces the negative attitudes towards LGBTQI+ persons and the characteristics of oppression and violence they experience in different societal settings.  This module looks at the different types of violence experienced by LGBTQI+ persons, including their most common experiences. It raises fundamental questions on how society treats their LGBTI+ members and what are the professionals’ competence in the subject.

After this module, learners  will be able to:

  • Understand the concept of basic rights and their violation
  • Understand the impact oppression has on LGBTQI+ persons
  • Be able to recognise the negative effects of oppression and violence
  • Work on their understanding of victimization
